After the Ramsey injury, this team could’ve folded like it did against Birmingham when Eduardo got injured or responded. They responded. We were the better side after the first 10 minutes and fully deserved the full three points. Stoke tried to bully their way but we wouldn’t have any of it and rightfully spanked the shit out of the cunts.
Moral of the story: Fabianski is trash and our strikers are ineffective. Also, Clichy is done. But we can overcome this by scoring just one goal in three weeks time.

Great game. Yes, the better parts of it were dull but sometimes that’s how a game needs to be played. The second-half saw an inspired performance from Arsenal and their persistence to go forward paid off. The backs did a good job of backtracking and even though Liverpool had their half-chances on the counter, the overall effort was solid and much improved from the weekend. Man Utd dropped 2 and Chelsea dropped 3. Spurs also lost to Wolves.
We must win. If we don’t, then it becomes a dogfight for a Champions League spot and we want no part of it. After this game we have a relatively easy schedule: Sunderland, Stoke, Burnley, Hull, West Ham, Birmingham and Wolverhampton. Arsenal will be favored to collect all three points in every single one of those games which means this is the last hurdle to greener pastures. Who knows, with some luck Man Utd and Chelsea could drop some points and it would be a title race again.
The good news is that they haven’t beaten us at home in over 10 years. Other than the robbery in the Champions League where Babel got awarded a penalty and Hleb got denied one, they’ve struggled against us. Usually the man to watch is Fernando Torres but he’s out with injury. This means the central defense combination of Gallas and Vermaelen will have to focus on Babel, Ngog and Maxi Rodriguez. I’m more worried about our situation at left-back where Clichy has looked far from reassuring, I’m concerned how he’ll handle the efficiency of Dirk Kuyt when he’s matched up with him, the latter has a tendency to score big goals for them. Kuyt doesn’t have the deception that Clichy saw in Nani or Ashley Young, nor the strength of Drogba, but the man is gritty and can will his way to a goal. I’m surprised how far Clichy has fallen, there was a time when I was shocked that he wasn’t part of the French team, now I see why.
Eduardo will not play today and he’s expected to return against Porto. The boss is probably thinking that since we were able to beat Liverpool (and quite handily in the second half) using the little Russian up front, there’s no reason we can’t do it again. We have really missed his creativity up front, he had scored a great header against West Ham and had setup a couple goals (one for Fabregas) before he got injured. Since then we’ve gone to the “single striker” lineup and that’s produced no results for us. I really do hope the boss starts Bendtner up front, I’m not saying he’s a great striker by any means but he at least has a chance of getting a head on those crosses we seem to be supplying of late. With Arhsavin those are a total waste, with Bendtner there’s a 1% chance he connects.
Arsenal.com has a pretty nice page where they keep track of how loaned players are doing. Caught a bit of Bolton’s game against Man City and have to say, Jack Wilshere did not seem out of place. They lost 2-0 but he was quite impressive in midfield and seemed very composed with the ball at his feet.
I hate the Spanish press for obvious reasons. Check this story where they’re saying Fabregas has agreed to a “verbal deal”. Soon after Barca “flatly deny” any such claim. I’m surprised The Telegraph would even publish a story which has no footing whatsoever but I suppose with the internet taking over newspapers, cheap hits are the way to go.
I don’t know how to approach the rest of the season, I think I’d just be willing to take third place and avoid the summer-time European qualification tie. Man United and Chelsea are 7 and 9 points clear, which means even if we play great football for the rest of the year, we’ll have to count on those teams dropping significant points. With only 13 games left, I just don’t see either of those two dropping many. Let’s face it, we had two “6 pointers” over the last two weeks and blew them both. Barring a collapse by the teams ahead of us, we’re out. Stranger things have happened and there’s always a chance, but even if those clubs drop points, I don’t think Arsenal will capitalize. Wenger still believes:
“I sit here in every single press conference and the situation of the moment is like it is forever. Sport is change, movement and we have to accept that,” said Wenger. “Of course it is realistic to still think we can catch Manchester United and Chelsea – why not? Everybody will drop points. We have already played all the big teams. We have a long way to go. We still have 13 games to play and 39 points to take.”
As I said, it’s not only a question of them dropping points, it’s also us going basically perfect for the rest of the season which is more unlikely.
The boys need to approach the Liverpool match with caution, because if we lose this then we’re back to fighting for fourth place and I’m not sure this team is mentally strong enough to handle that kind of pressure. Arsene has to bide his time this season and hope that he can sign reinforcements this summer, until then we have to hang on to our Champions League spot because losing that would be truly disastrous.
Wenger’s denying that he tried to sign Sorensen before the deadline. Does it matter at this point? I do hope he’s lying because if Wenger was actively searching for a replacement for Almunia, it’s a step towards the right direction. Almunia is not good enough to be Arsenal’s #1 goalkeeper.
Chamakh is almost a sure thing this summer. We sure could’ve used his height against Man Utd and Chelsea. I don’t agree with the criticism leveled at Arshavin in those two matches, he’s done a pretty good job considering he’s playing out of position. Those of us who think that he’s playing “selfish” are wrong, a striker is supposed to shoot and that’s what he’s done. I’m sure glad somebody at Arsenal is shooting the ball because players like Walcott, Bendtner and even Nasri have a tendency to dribble too much even when a shot-opportunity (however low percentage) presents itself.
Daniel Agger thinks Liverpool can beat Arsenal. I hope Daniel Agger breaks a leg in the shower.
