Alan Hansen’s take on Theo Walcott (MOTD video)
Hansen’s take on Walcott after the Blackpool game. I think it’s harsh to say this after the game Theo had, but in essence he’s right that a player should be judged against better talent (Evra, Cole) than what Blackpool had to offer. To also criticize Walcott for “playing the wrong ball” is also being harsh, even the greatest player in the world will play the wrong ball a couple times a game, which is what Walcott did. The video is embedded below, you can also view it on DM.

Hansen doesn’t have a footballing brain. What an absolute twunt! Only this asshole would berate a man who just scored a hattrick. Just goes to show how much he hates the Arsenal. Exactly the reason I never watch MOTD. Sucking ManU and Chav cock is unbecoming of a ladyboy like Hansen and yet he continues to do it. He’s a worthless pile of shit. Go on Theo!
Hansen really is a fool. I mean I think it is safe to say that every player will have rough patches, and then there are superb performances, but can you expect a flawless performance?
When Lionel Messi scored four goals against us, everyone was going nuts over him, talking about his ability to score goals, create chances etc. Yet how many times did he squander the ball, losing it or providing a poor pass? He also missed a few good chances, but Hansen didn’t say anything bad did he?
The fact is that the mentality will always be as such against Arsenal players, specifically Theo Walcott. The expectations on him are so ridiculous, that even after scoring a very, very good hat-trick, he can possibly still be berated. Simply ridiculous.
It was the best overall performance from Walcott in an Arsenal shirt, if not second to the one he put out against Villareal when we won 3-0. I have no complaints if he can bring this out in coming games. Certainly he is showing why Capello should have brought him in, and why he can make the monumental difference this season.
i hate to agree with hansen, but I do. What he said is true, Theo does tend to make poor decisions when he gets a lot of time on the ball and has time to think about his next move. We all get frustrated by Theo and it’s because of those moments. However, especially in a pretty meaningless game such as this one, that shouldn’t take away from a superb performance. Let’s hope he continues to do the number 14 shirt proud !
hansen is talking some things i agree with, i love arsenal but theo is overrated, just want him to grow up. quicker he does that quicker we win things
I find it funny when a lot of people mention Theo Walcott, they mention him being either “over-rated” or just plainly criticize him. It just sound stupid because either is he really over-rated as a player or your just judging him over the England Media. Everyone knows this by now that everyone in England hypes up there future England players, Like ex. Jack Wilshere, Theo, Rooney!! THEO IS only FREAKEN 21!! Besides he’s gotten out of serious injuries and still taking up with the harsh criticisms and still trying to play his best. Besides how the hell is he over-rated?? people just believe the hype on a player and expect them to be fantastic. Since he didn’t even get called up for the national squad, people like Hansen are still criticizing him. We all know he has a lot to work, even Wenger has acknowledged that.
While I don’t think Hansen picked a very good time to try and bring a point to head he so clearly thought out before the match, he has an excellent point.
The thing is Theo (and we supporters) should be pushing to be so much better. Hansen also showed the way to defend Theo. No one else in the PL is going to close in too far on him. And when they do or Theo gets the better of them he HAS to put them to the sword. Every single time.
Stop treating this team as teens with no idea of the world. This season should mark for most when they stood up and realized at least a tenth of the potential shown. just that little bit from those off the pace in seasons past will put us and KEEP us top of the table in May.
This is actually very funny… Poor old Theo has the game of his life now everybody is breaking him down… WHAT WE AS ARSENAL SUPPORTERS should do is sing is praise… Let me explain why:
I do agree with what that loser said BUT he just needs a little bit of confidence… Look at what the world cup did for Vela… He played as one of the more important players for Mexico, scored a few goals and look at how well he is playing…He is in the form of his life! All Theo needs is a bit of confidence on the ball.
The second thing is if you tee of (in golf) with water on your right and you know you have a little fade, the more you think about the water the greater the chance you have of slicing the ball into the water. So, we should get behind him, cheer him when he slice the ball into the new clock and have a laugh about it! HE IS ONLY 21, Henry played his best soccer from 26-30…. He has 5 years to develop!!!!

In Arsene we trust
Wooooooooooooooooow! Hansen is the biggest hater ever! who the f*ck plays the right ball everytime? that wasn’t fair! But theo played the game of his life and we should be looking at the posistive not the negatives!! I hope he continues to play like this and keeps proving them doubter wrong! If we stay healthy woooow! the heights we can reach this season are unlimited!
I agree with Ernst and Belve. I don’t think Hansen’s criticism was unfair. He acknowledged Theo’s young age and the overall good game, so I don’t know what all these posters are complaining about. You can’t expect everyone to suddenly jump on the Walcott bandwagon after a hat trick against a team like Blackpool.
HOWEVER, I think it needs to be said that being on the same page with everyone else takes effort from everybody. It isn’t always Walcott’s fault no one is at the end of a particular cross.
@lockdown12 “HOWEVER, I think it needs to be said that being on the same page with everyone else takes effort from everybody. It isn’t always Walcott’s fault no one is at the end of a particular cross.”
Hahaha it is because no one can catch him! He is to fast and he sometimes plays a ball across the 6 yard box, hoping that someone was offside but is now played onside! He is just to fast!
@KeepTheFaith….Exactly! Well, that’s part of it anyway. Sometimes young Theo does indeed make the wrong decision, but sometimes it’s not necessarily a bad ball, it’s just that the teammate he’s looking for isn’t on the same page. See Bendtner from last season for many examples!
Absolute rubbish! Theo was stunning. This guy criticizes just for the sake of it. All players might make a few mistakes in a game. Mr. Alan we don’t judge Theo on his misses but on his hat-trick and his other fantastic pieces of play.
Okay so I know that I’m preaching to the converted here but what gets me about the Hansen criticism is that he states both in the MOTD criticism and in his column (written before MOTD) in the Telegraph that Walcott when he has time to think isn’t as good as when he plays the ball quickly. This actually contradicts his and Waddle’s argument that Walcott doesn’t have a ‘football brain’. What both men fail to realise is that if one has to think to complete any physical task. It may seem as if one acts without thought but in actuality it is impossible to move purposefully without thinking. To kick or pass a ball requires thought about the direction and strength of the pass or kick. Thus if as Hansen and Waddle contend Walcott has no football brain how could he even play professional football? Further if Walcott can only play at high speed it seems to me that he thinks very quickly indeed and that he over-thinks football rather than under-thinks.
Hanson has had a downer on Arsenal ever since we beat his precious Liverpool to win the league back in 1989.
He will never change.
He’s just a sad old has-been, who deserves to be ignored.
Spot On Hansen!!
Alan Hansen is a waste of taxpayer money – I should’nt have to pay for this rubbish!
I hope he gets the chop, he is turning into modern day Jimmy Hill!
I hope he gets the BBC chop when they make cuts.
It is so obvious that Hansen despises the Arsenal FC. It is not possible for him to be objective about any of the players. Its not just Theo. When Cole played for AFC he was just the same. yet move him to Chelsea and there is a different commentary. There is something about the club Hansen hates and only he will know. You can see that it is physically and psychologically difficult for him to say nice things about the club. Watch him next time. He cannot hide it. Poor old man.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – Hansen would never say this if Theo was a Liverpool player, or white. Simple as that. Theo is a genuine nice guy and is never going on come out in the media to forcefully answer back at the ridiculous criticisms of him considering his age, so he’s an easy target for the likes of Alan Hansen. Clearly the rest in the summer has benefited him. That was a superb hat trick and a cracking finish was his goat Blackburn. Well done to Salt n Lineker for trying to defend him.
Still bitter from Anfield 1989…?
