Was Fabregas wrong to play in a friendly versus Mexico?

Fabregas played 45 minutes against Mexico but didn’t feature in Arsenal’s match in Poland. I understand that he needs to get fit and get some pre-season football under his belt, but I rather he either do that against Warsaw, rest for a whole week and be ready for a tough trip to Anfield. Travelling halfway across the world to face Mexico in a meaningless match is pointless; he’s going to come back on Thursday or Friday and surely miss the Liverpool game.

With Robin Van Persie already behind in fitness, Cesc would have been a great boost but now we’ll be heading to Anfield with Jack Wilshere likely to play a big part. Wilshere is no doubt a talented youngster with a bright future at Arsenal, but in an early statement-game such as this, we needed our captain. Sorry to be moaning so much but it makes no sense to me why country is put before club in a pointless game. I would understand if it was a qualifying game of any sort, but a friendly in Mexico?!? It would even have been acceptable for me if he missed the whole week and not play any football at all, but playing for Spain and not for Arsenal doesn’t make sense. To me at least.

That leads us to today’s poll:

He has no choice whether he plays or not if he’s called up by his national side. So you can’t blame him. It’s the timing of these international friendlies that’s ridiculous.

  2. Karen Senoo says:

I’ve heard he had to be there because it was made an agreement betweem the two confederations in which all the main players should be there. So he really didn’t have a choice. But glad he only played 45 minutes. I watched the game and for me he looked fit. Can’t see why he won’t be able to make it on sunday.

  3. Oliver says:

You do know that he has no choice over whether he features for Spain, don’t you? If an uninjured player is called up to play for his country he must go.

  4. George says:

you’re talking balls. why aren’t you moaning about england’s arsenal contingent?? plus, it wasn’t a meaningless match – it wa to celibrate 100th anniversary of mexico’s independence from Spain.

  5. zeb says:

george has got a very good point, walcott and gibbs both played 45 minutes for england, and i heard samir nasri played the whole game for france, but you didnt say anything about them?

  6. zizou says:

he didnt talk about those players because they have been training for weeks now and are available for selection into the first team….ths isnt the first there has been 2 games scheduled within the span of 4 or 5 days. Fabregas on the other hand had been on holiday and is a “doubt” to play cuz hes not “fit” which is slightly weird to me what wenger is thinking. But i definitely blame this on the shceduling of the international…why the ()#*% would they schedule them 3 days before the start of footbal season?

Stupid question. If he refused to be called up for Spain and they objected he would be banned from playing for us on Sunday anyway. Unless he retired from international football of course!

If England had any balls they would insist on Carrick not playing this weekend.

  8. lockdown12 says:

Well, at least it wasn’t the full match and he came out of it unscathed.

  9. gt says:

All these friendlies are meaningless, but Cesc’s is particularly bad. He has to travel around 1/2 the globe and back, with the bloody WC only ended a month ago!! This friendly game undeniably robbed us of Cesc’s service for Anfield. And Vela’s too. Thankfully all (?) players seem to come back in one piece.

  10. singha says:

I think it was a rash decision on Cesc part because I mean the guy came back from just winning the world cup! Honesty what else do you have to prove Spain shit you won the world cup. As Blatter said these international friendlies does not state that you need to have yor A team suited. Cesc should have let his fitness and body rest to prepare for the season
