Should we sign a goalkeeper OR a defender?
After the preseason, one thing is quite evident: we need a defender and a goalkeeper. It’s nothing new and we have been through this before, Wenger’s faith in Almunia and Fabianksi makes your heart warm and fuzzy but none of those two are Arsenal-quality goalkeepers. Fabianksi is simply terrible and if he’s making mistakes in pre-season games, I can’t bear to watch him even on the pitch when we play at Chelsea or Man Utd in a crunch game in April.
Laurent Koscielny has been a pleasant addition, but despite that we have seen our defense torn to shred at times, with through-balls finding strikers in very advantageous positions against our defense. Which is the greater need? A goalie or a defender? If Wenger had to buy one more players, what position would that player be?
is it that hard for a club as big as arsenal to sign both?

@goooner! the thought of Arsenal getting players on loan instead of buying them is depressing.
gooonner! its a nice thought, but why would man city loan a good keeper to one of its biggest rivals? Its a laughable idea.
Mertesack or however you spell his name would be a good addition

I think it is vital that we sign a new goalie. I feel as the season progresses our back four will improve but we need someone in net who has a little gray hair and a lot of confidence. We are lacking consistency in front of the net and anyone with some experience, especially in big games, will be a welcomed addition. I think Stekelenberg could be the answer to our solutions, if we can land him that is.
Ya i agree we need an experienced guy who will be able to command the defense n give them the necessary confidence n they will hopefully learn how to defend better..
I feel that the quality is there but they don hv right tactics or mental strength at all times.. They switch off too easily at times n in big games they don do that well.. they crumble too easily probably coz they dunno how to go bout it…
An experienced center back will also be a good addition
We desperately need both positions but I’ve gone for goalkeeper due to the simple fact Almunia and Fabianski are the worst goalkeepers in the Premier League. Wenger has consistently put the goalkeepers feelings before the club and it needs to stop, why risk vital points for the sake of hurting their feelings? It’s shocking, any other manager would see they are not good enough and drop them, it may seem harsh but if you want to win things then you do what you have to do.
We need both, but our main target should be a new CB, before buying a GK. Don’t trust Almunia 100%, but he’s not the worst I have ever seen, so I think if we had a solid defense, Almunia could handle in the goal. As for Fabianski, how many times does he have to show he’s not good enough gor us to AW??
we need both! reinforcements for the CB’s and then we need a keeper badly. Vito Mannone to me has been the only keeper that I saw from last season that looked confident and was a reliable man behind the pipes
@cj…Other big English clubs like Manchester United haven’t exactly lit up the transfer market, but you’re right. Arsenal should be able to sign both no problem.
I think keeper is slightly more important right now, and Sebastian Frey would be the ideal buy. We should also be able to buy Given from Man City, seeing as how he will want to search for regular playing time elsewhere once Hart is made number one (should have just bought Given last year). Stecklenberg is another one within our reach. Even Schwarzer, who we’ve long been linked with, would be an improvement.
At CB there are any number of players we could seemingly bring in: Sakho, Mertesacker, Emir Spahic (who has apparently said he’d be open to a move)…

Arsene needs to cut the “faith” rubbish and start being real. If I was forced to pick one it’d probably be the goalkeeper; the mistakes made by the defence are nothing compared to the fuck ups of Almunia and Fabianski.
You don’t want to start the season off shaky you want to be secure & confident. In all honesty how many chances does Fabianski need to show up. I believe he’s had more then enough opportunites. With this news about him wanting to be the no. 1 then fu€king show it! Just speaking and not having your game show on the field is utter bull. Wenger sign a keeper and do it sometime this week before the season kicks off Sunday or we could see ourselves at the bottom with a negative goal differential & 3 points lost!!!!!
