Jamario Moon gets to launch 20 footers for another year

Posted by Arsenalist on May 15, 2008

There’s a sense of emptiness in the time between when the Raptors get eliminated from the playoffs and the last game of the post-season, you sort of want the whole thing to be over and free agency to begin so that the Raptors return to whatever significance they deserve.

The Raptors did pick up the option on Jamario Moon which was a no-brainer in the sense that he’s somebody you want to bring back on the team, the only request from this observer is that lets not have him start 75 games. It ruins the fun of watching what he does well when he’s asked to produce beyond his meager means. The other way to look at it is this: Moon’s trade value is higher than it deserves to be right now and you could package him along with TJ Ford for something valuable. A potentially great point guard plus a defensive swingman? I see the Knicks biting, Jamal Crawford please. Anyway, enjoy the money Jamario.

Danny Ainge was named the EOY after Boston’s good season which has a very good chance of coming to an end after this series. The Cavs lost Game 5 but there’s all indication that they’ll take Game 6 and with Lebron at the helm, Game 7 is up in the air. I sense a Detroit Game 5 type performance coming from him.

As the Mike D’Antoni regime in NY begins, Isaiah Thomas is back to doing something he’s good at: scouting. He’s on a mission to Europe to check out Danilo Gallinari and Nicolas Batum. I’m guessing Bryan Colangelo and fat little Maurizio Gherardini have already been down this road and are looking to trade up to grab one of these two. Wouldn’t it be a shocker if they trade TJ Ford to the Knicks for a lottery pick and draft a Euro? Haha, I think I’d kill myself. Really.

Talk about different expectations from coaches, Flip Saunders might just get fired if Detroit doesn’t win the title this year while Sam Mitchell’s getting a free pass after a 41-41 season and a quick playoff exit. Yes, I know the teams have different talent levels but ask yourself this: Did Mitchell come even close to doing a good job this year? Are we just hoping that he figures out how to make proper substitutions, not ignore players for weeks, exploit matchups, come up with an offense? If we’re not making a coaching change this year, we need to at least add an assistant coach that can contribute in these areas.

I’m starting a Euro 2008 pool, feel free to join. I have no idea how you’ll get me the entry fee.

good for moon. i am happy for the guy, just don’t want to see him play more tha 15min a night. if he is, this team is in bad shape.

i suspect smitch’s leash is much shorter than you think. if the raptors start the season on a losing note, he will get axed within 30 games.

  2. FAQ Says:

“I would like to start, have high aspirations and be part of a winning team,” Calderon said. “Now it’s up to Toronto. We’ll know more in July.”

“I would like to start and that’s the most important thing,” Calderon insisted. “I’ve been two years with him, but I don’t know if I could be another year because things would have to change.” (El Mundo Deportivo)

Chose BC … Calderon or TJ … Jose has now publicly stated his conditions to stay with the Raptors, namely:

    1. Starting PG next year or I’m gone.
    2. Winning team or I’m gone.

The deadline is July, and BC will have to show Jose the money … like maybe $10 Mil per and 4 years maybe ..??!!!

  3. Johnn19 Says:

Moon was the best deal (bargain) of the year. At $350k Rap’s got the second best (6.2) rebounder at only 2.5 less than bosh and best shot blocker @ (1.4) in his 1st exposure to the NBA. A second year @ $700k
is a no brainer bargain, with added experience he should improve.

  4. arsenalist Says:

Johnn19, those numbers are nice but they come with him playing close to 30 minutes a game and since he brings practically nothing on offense, that becomes a long time to tolerate him.

  5. Raps Fan Says:

with a diminished role/minutes, he wont be as productive. but getting a serviceable 3 for $750k/year is a steal.

jc is scaring me, lol. i appreciate he is drawing a line in the sand. seems like he’s the only voice of reason at the pg position in the organization. either way, things are a changing.

  6. FAQ Says:

Isn’t it heartwarming to see somebody like Jamario make it in the NBA with the Raptors?! Everybody seems to love him and his comeback story .. giving fans hope as well. Maybe Gherardini should be scouting the NBADL rather than Europe for good American bballers who only need to be given a chance to make it big in the NBA.

If you compare Bargs to Jamario on a dollar per performance basis, Moon will be the better financial deal. To bad he’s so old now and may not have the brains to get any better.

  7. RapsFan Says:

    Crawford? Yuck.

  8. arsenalist Says:

RapsFan (so bloody confusing with Raps Fan around, thats why I got the avatars :), Crawford is the one guy I’d pick on the Knicks. Over David Lee. He’s a true scorer and actually plays hard. I’d take him over AP at the starting SG spot any day.

His FG percentage sucks ass though but I’d be willing to work with him. He’s never been in a good system, first the Bulls when they sucked ass and now the Knicks. Put him on a real team and he might thrive.

  9. Raps Fan Says:

for me, it would be a toss-up between lee and crawford. i like both. i think i would go lee just for his defense and rebounding. if you can play defense and grab boards, you don’t have to score as much to win.

i agree with arse though, he hasn’t played on good teams, and with the right tutelage, he would thrive. can’t do much about shot selection at this point, but he can light ti up. if he was a raptor, at the minimum we wouldn’t have to worry about shutting him down 4 times a season, lol.

  10. Sam Says:

We might need to temper our expectations on what we get for TJ if that’s the route BC takes. Crawford would be a decent deal but I have a feeling TJ’s health, obvious difficulties adjusting to Jose’s ascendance and $8mil./year are going to make a lot of GM’s (maybe all GM’s now that Isaih’s gone and Memphis has 3 pg’s) unwilling to give us much. The guy who wrote into Grange suggesting TJ for Malik Rose’s expiring contract may be closer to predicting the future than this current Lee or Crawford debate.

Oh, and from what I’ve seen (and to borrow from Bill Simmons) the Knicks bloggers have threatened 3 days of rioting if David Lee is traded.

The way I see it, the bottom line is TJ needs to go - not because he’s the lesser talent or even because he’s a bad guy but because Jose is at least close on talent, better for the team in the locker room and perhaps the smarter player. That said, who knows what the real story is - only Sam, BC et al. can really make the chemistry call that’s at the heart of the TJ vs. Jose question.

  11. FAQ Says:

Another PG factor is the status of Ukic. If BC brings Ukic in this year how will that impact his JC/TJ decision??

If JC gets his big contract and starting PG position, TJ will be expendable. I still think the Sun’s desperately need a backup PG to relieve aging Nash of PT and eventually replace him .. and TJ would be just the one to do it. Nasty Sarver could deal Barbosa and Diaw but split them between the Raps and Knicks .. and wouldn’t that be sweet revenge …??!!!

  12. FAQ Says:

Opps .. another thought about Ukic … and if he is brought in, and TJ is kept, wouldn’t that create the same problem as with JC and TJ … mixing a Euro PG with a US PG that confuses everybody else … so by dealing off TJ that would result in a Euro PG duo for the Raptors …!!!

Redick To Magic: Play Me Or Trade Me

    The Orlando Sentinel - May 15, 2008

Magic shooting guard J.J. Redick expects to play with the team next season, but he hasn’t backed off his request to be traded if he doesn’t earn playing time, according to The Orlando Sentinel.

“I want to play. There were a lot of things that were said last summer and in the preseason, you know, and I thought I was going to play. It didn’t happen,” Redick said.
    …………………………………………

Would JJ be a good addition to the Raptors at SG … because they could easily trade Graham for him.. and more potential too maybe … after all they took a flyer on Jamario ..??

  14. MUHDIK Says:

arse, u really are a weak fucken cunt….now even u are on the queer “we hate euro’s” bandwagon…shame on u,u bitch.

  15. MUHDIK Says:

    ..kill yourself….really.

  16. arsenalist Says:

Ouch, when did I say I hate Euros? Do point me to the post. I’m not in favor of trading one of our two tradeable assets (Ford, other being Kapono) to move up in the draft and get another young guy when this team needs an experienced scorer. Drafting a Euro with a high pick means bringing him along slowly and waiting for his development and transition to the NBA - no thanks, I’m done with that shit!

  17. khandor Says:

Graham for Redick doesn’t happen. Redick is a former NCAA D1 National Player of The Year, who has languished on the Magic’s bench because they don’t know how to use his strengths and minimize his weaknesses … BUT Redick remains a ‘valuable asset’ to their organization, which is far from what Graham is (at this point) to the Raptors.

TJ needs to go BECAUSE he isn’t as talented as Calderon.

Personnel decisions, at this level, are based on talent.

Because you think Ford is more talented than Calderon doesn’t make it so.

Do a poll of GMs in the NBA and then publish the results. If they agree with you … I will retract my statement, above.

re: “To bad he’s [Moon] so old now and may not have the brains to get any better.”
    ==============================================

Pejorative statements like that are objectionable, IMHO.

    Calderon isn’t a Euro-PG. Neither is Ukic.

    And, Ford isn’t a US-PG either.

Calderon is a 6-3, 210, pass-first, set the play up, run the team, facilitate scoring opportunities for others, good sized, good decision-making, good leadership, good body language, improved perimeter shooting, outstanding AST:TO, who can switch on D to check different positions (size-wise) & rebound effectively … PG, who has already won a World’s Championship.

    Ford … is not.

It’s a player’s GAME that matters, not the geographical region in the world where he’s from by birth.

    ======================================

If the Raptors want to maximize Jamario Moon’s abilities, as an NBA player, they will have him spend his summer learning how to play the 2-position … instead of forcing a round peg into a square hole.

Enjoy the rest of your day!

    khandor ^^^^

I only floated the idea of Graham for Redick, and my question was would Redick be a good addition to the Raptors. Their salaries were close so I just mentioned Graham.

As for Moon, he’s just an athletic freak show, and it’s evident he doesn’t fit into an NBA team because he doesn’t have the bball brains to run plays. He’s just out there to do his thing mostly on defence and that’s about it. I would be surprised if any other NBA team would accept Moon in a trade package. Moon is too old to be retrained as you seem to suggest.

Calderon is a playmaking PG whereas TJ is a one-man, playground-type bballer who is emotionally unfit to lead the Raptors. What puzzles me is those who think JC should be traded because “he has more value” than TJ, and that leaves the Raptors with what at PG ..???

As for your personal judgement that my statements are “pejorative” and “objectionable” .. why don’t you just stuff your opinions up uranus.

  19. NO_HESITATION Says:

I just happen to stumble across this site as i was seeking to find out more about J. Moon’s contract option with the Raptors. First i have to say to you gents who feel as if Moon gets to many minutes and does not score enough, thats because he is on a team that has a lot of selfish players. I know J. Moon personally. I am from his hometown, Goodwater Ala., I watched him play high school bball and battle against Gerald Wallace of the Charlotte Bobcats (who attended Childersburg H.S., and never won a game against J. Moon and the Coosa Central H.S. Cougars), thats enough digression. In fact J. Moon is my cousin. I am 42 yrs old, he graduated with my niece (Latonya), and we all are members of the same church.

I know J. Moon can create offensive shots for himself, take his man off the dribble, shoot and make 3’s consistently, but if any of you all had taken the time to notice, J. Moon is a “team player” and he knows he is not the first, second, or third primary scoring option on the team, but what he does do, that most of the others don’t is, play DEFENSE. Moon is 6′8″ 210lbs, that other guy is 7′0″ and cannot jump. So it does not matter if one player can score alot of points, because if he does not play defense, the other team will out score them and still win, i.e., Kobe and his 82 point or whatever he scored in that game, but the Lakers lost.

Final word, Jamario Moon is a keeper. Period.
