Crosshair: Jose Calderon
Posted by Arsenalist on May 5, 2008
Next up is Jose Calderon.
There’s plenty of good things to say about Jose Calderon, his play has been a breath of fresh air for every Raptors fan regardless of which side of the TJ/Jose fence you’re on. Calderon has developed an ability to lead a team through his smart decision making skills, greatly improved and highly accurate outside shooting, uncanny ability to turn the corner on high screens and most of all his passing which always finds the man most eligible for the shot.
This year he upped his scoring by 2.5 points while increasing his assists by 3.3 and still shot better than 50% from the floor, one of only three point guards to do so, the other two? Steve Nash and Deron Williams. He also happens to be ranked #3 in PER for PGs. His play when TJ Ford went down with injury was one of the main reasons along with Chris Bosh that the Raptors were able to make the playoffs. What makes Calderon a highly effective point guard for the Raptors is that he understands who his teammates are, you’ll never see him throw a pass which he knows the recipient can’t handle, he rarely takes a risk on the break and always looks to get his teammates setup early in the shot-clock. As he’s coming up the floor his first option is to find any trailers that might be open in the form of Andrea Bargnani, Jason Kapono, Anthony Parker and even Carlos Delfino. He’s a selfless point guard that wants to win and help make his teammates better and is willing to sacrifice numbers and playing time as long as it means team success.
There’s been plenty written about his league-leading 5.38 assist to turnover ratio which gives the correct impression that Calderon is careful with the ball and handles each possession with care. In the mid-season stretch when TJ Ford went down, Calderon was the driving force behind the Raptors. He increased his offensive output and became a legitimate scoring threat which the defense had to respect and that opened up options for everyone else. His clutch fourth-quarter 3-pt play in Boston was the apex of his season and during that stretch he proved that he should be the starting point guard for an NBA team.
If you’re a Calderon critic you might point out his conservative offensive play as being a reason why the Raptors struggle to get easy points on the break. This is a true criticism of Calderon who tends to pull back the offense on 3/2 or 4/3 breaks and doesn’t “force the issue” if it isn’t there. That is partially the reason why his AST/TO numbers are so high but it happens to be a double-edged sword. The Raptors don’t have great athletes or finishers who run the break and TJ Ford’s play is evidence that running the break with this Raptor crew isn’t exactly a great idea. Calderon recognizes this and values the possession more than the chance at easy points, maybe this will change if Ford is gone and Calderon feels he’ll need to make-up for Ford’s “pushing” style of basketball to some extent. I don’t believe by any means that Calderon is protecting his league-leading AST/TO ratio by any means.
The main reason Calderon is so much more dangerous this year is because he’s improved his 15-19ft game. Last year he was primarily a threat to drive off the high screen but this year he’s shown that he can step a few feet inside the arc, rise, and drain the jumper. This has made him a dual threat which NBA defenses have to respect and given Calderon’s intelligence in these matters, he’s been able to translate that into high assist numbers while keeping the decisions intelligent. Given the Euro stylings of the Raptors, Calderon’s patience, leadership and high basketball IQ appear to be the perfect fit for the team Bryan Colangelo’s trying to build. Whether you agree with his team-building method is an entirely different issue.
Calderon plays hard and with his heart on his sleeve, he can shoot, finish, can setup teammates and this season he showed he can do it while playing extended minutes. Something we didn’t know before this season and something that will weigh heavy on Colangelo’s mind as he decides whether to bring TJ Ford back.
Just like every other Raptors perimeter player, Calderon’s defense is below-par. He is extremely guilty of allowing dribble-penetration and has trouble fighting through screens and contesting shots. He’s a victim of Sam Mitchell’s half-ass defensive strategy and you can often find him double-teaming players for odd reasons allowing his man to knock down the open jumper. At 6′ 3″ and long arms he should be a good defender especially given how hard he plays, but so far in his NBA career we haven’t seen anything from Calderon that might indicate he can hold his own on the defensive end.
The Orlando series exposed his defense to some degree as he couldn’t contain Jameer Nelson or Keyoon Dooling from getting in the paint which allowed the Magic guards to pick out shooters. His lateral quickness isn’t great and one would think he should play the offensive player for the shot instead of the drive, a far safer option. If there is a knock against Calderon it is his defense, this also happens to be one of the core problems with the Raptors. Allowing penetration at the point-of-attack is something no NBA team can live with, either the Raptors need to adopt a better defensive strategy or Calderon needs to tighten up his defense or there needs to be the sufficient interior defense that can tolerate Calderon’s man getting into the paint. He played 30 minute a game this year which was up 9 minutes from the previous year, we expect this number to only get higher and its paramount that we don’t suffer defensively as his minutes increase.
Calderon’s a restricted free agent and Bryan Colangelo has already said that he’ll match any offer for Calderon. By all indications, he’s here to stay and we have to work with what we have - an intelligent, hard-working point guard with a very reliable outside touch and a tendency to take it to the rim when the opportunity presents itself. Not bad at all. You know his offensive game has nowhere to go but up and as long as he can improve his defensive game he’s going to be a mainstay in Toronto.
The new season is over 5 long months away but I’m already looking forward to how Calderon will improve next year. He’s a player that you want on this team and are willing to live with his flaws as long as the coach can do an average job of hiding them.
I’m off to Dubai for a week long vacation, I’ll do my best to keep the crosshairs coming. Maybe give you guys a snapshot of the man-made city while I’m at it.
As for the present today, its one of my favorite scenes from Reservoir Dogs where Steve Buscemi (Mr. Pink) is trying to get out of tipping.

enjoy your trip and stay out of the crosshairs.

Calderon has 360º floor visualization, while TJ has tunnel vision.
Calderon is predictable to his team mates, while TJ confuses everybody.
Calderon is a brainy PG who initiates strategy discussion with Mitchell, while Mitchell is always explaining things to TJ.
Calderon is trusted by Mitchell, while TJ is given opportunity and fails.
Calderon need to have a ‘team’ around him to compensate for his defensive shortcomings, while TJ needs to be on a run ‘n gun team like the PHX Suns.
May 5, 2008 at 11:19 am
Tsk tsk FAQ, this isn’t a TJ vs. Jose thread. Also “Calderon need to have a ‘team’ around him to compensate for his defensive shortcomings” is a blanket statement that’s supposed to justify his defense?
He’s a crap defensive player, if he starts he’ll probably be one of the worst defensive starting PGs in the league after the likes of Chris Quinn. I still want him on the team though, he brings too much on offense to not play. Team defense can only hide you so much, in the end its upto him to get better.

Miami may be interested in a trade for TJ:
http://www.miamiherald.com/1262/story/519566.html
I would love to get Haslem in that trade.
May 5, 2008 at 11:29 am
D’ANTONI IS TALKIN TO OTHER TEAMS!! No longer will we suffer through Smitch’s confident ignorance.

May 5, 2008 at 11:50 am
jays08, perhaps you missed BC unequivocally saying that he’s not going to replace Smitch. He sounded like he meant it, more so than when he said the same thing about CV two years ago.
I’ll take Haslem’s 9 rebounds but I doubt Miami will give him up for an injury prone PG who’s labeled as selfish. I don’t know what the situation with Barbosa is but Phoenix is the best fit for TJ. I don’t think Kerr will acquire him though, he’s already made a deal for an injury-prone aging big man, no point taking another risk with TJ.

Next season, do you still want to watch TJ messing around, or do you want to watch Jose running plays..??!!!
I personally don’t want to look at TJ’s brand of bball because it confuses the player, the coach and yes, the fans too. TJ is on the wrong team and should be traded regardless.
This has got to be Jose’s team to run and hopefully BC will go on a trade rampage and bring in new international players. BC can’t just slowly rebuild this team .. he must make bold moves to begin the changes that are so necessary to provide competitiveness and entertainment.

jays08- Raptors2009 is completely correct. As well, the Suns have given permission for D’Antoni to talk to two teams and have told him Toronto isn’t an option, unless he leaves outright. Remember the hatred between the current Suns management and BC. That should also be remembered for trade talks.
FAQ- BC said he will not make any trades unless they involve short contracts (rent-a-player basically) and that Toronto is a non-factor in free agency this year. So, drafting and small trades are what you have to look forward to. Your fear of a slow rebuild is about to become your nightmare.
May 5, 2008 at 2:47 pm
So D’Antoni isn’t coming to Toronto because 1) BC’s word is as good as gold or 2) the Phoenix management would never allow it because BC is a traitorous bastard. Come on, can’t we all just believe in BC’s ability to fuck over Phoenix? Plus, eating massive salaries has become fashionable in Toronto.
May 5, 2008 at 2:48 pm
This won’t happen but Jose needs to pack his bags. I really don’t care what he does during 3and1/2 quarters. He has no clue what he’s doing when the game is on the line and lacks the killer instinct that TJ does have. He doesn’t even trash talk and runs away from conflict when it arises, like a little schoolgirl. JOIN THE PEACE CORPS, HOMBRE!
I can see why one would want Euro ball, but when the playoffs come and the US players walk onto the court ready to murder everyone in sight, I really don’t want to watch a team play with their diapers leaking all over the place.
Arse, I’m not sure how much improvement you are expecting. He’s going to be, what, 28 next year? The D is never going to get better and things will only start to fall apart, IMO, sooner then later.
Them young(er) cats in the L are not playing. Not the mention the miles he racked up in the oh so precious EuroL. (see: Parker, Antonia)
And when are people going to get off the fire Sam bandwagon? Holy F!
May 5, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Jose is just reaching his prime as a NBA player and is peaking as a PG. Look at the other ‘older’ PGs who are starters in the L(eague?). No, I think that Jose is here to stay and TJ will be sent off to continue building his career elsewhere. Perhaps this Ukic fella will come over now …..
As for Sarver hating BC, that certainly is a factor in their NBA relationship, but Sarver must be burdened with the fact that should Nash go down for a protracted period, the Suns are Sh!tless at PG..!!!
I hope BC is dangling TJ in front of Sarver and making him drool, because like the Mafia, it’s a business and nothing should get in the way of business. You help me, I help you … plain and simple.
Then there’s the saga of the Spanish Euro-team whipping the US All-Stars … with ‘team’ play … and I am confident that an internationalized Raptor team, which will include USians, will provide the multiculti Toronto fans with great entertainment and great bball …!!!!
May 5, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Have fun in Dubai. I vacationed there last year. You should try Dune Bashing, it was lots of fun for me.
May 5, 2008 at 8:16 pm
True, FAQ, but how many of those older guys have won chips? Roko should come over, but I doubt BC thinks he’s ready. His shooting from outside needs work and his assist have been suffering..maybe just an adjustment period. Hopefully, his country gets to the Olympics and we get to see what he’s got.
Also, you are right, the international play has been up to par to the US.. but when the US decides to play together and turn it on.. it’s hard to stop them.. not to mention, in a 7 game series..I’m sure they would come out on top.
May 5, 2008 at 11:33 pm
Fluxl … I tend to agree with you that in a 7 game series, a new bunch of international players would be beaten handily … but as long as a Raptor team reaches the playoffs, that good enough for me, and being honestly realistic. Those Rap fans who demand a championship team filled with USians are just beating their meat in futility because it ain’t gonna happen nohow.
We accept that BC is hell bent on assembling an international Raps team to make Toronto the first truly international team in the NBA .. and it’s ironic there will probably be no Canadian baller on that team unless they trade for Nash ..!!! Regardless, the Raptors are sinking talent-wise in the Atlantic division, so it would be timely to make the full transition to a Euro-style international team .. all with the blessing of MLSE, the Teacher’s Union and commisioner Stern who is also hell bent on a semi-competitive international team in Toronto. Stern wants to sell NBA franchises in Europe because that would not only enrich the present owners, it would probably make him filthy rich too.
It wouldn’t surprise me if BC blew up the Raptors this summer and bring in a group of Euro players with a Euro coach too. The team would tank in it’s first NBA season and BC would again get high draft picks the next year .. all part of the plan. Do you want to hear more..??!!!
Are you with me .. or are you cringing in the corner of yer box and shaking with unrequited Fan Fever ..??!!
May 6, 2008 at 9:02 am
LOL! I always have the fan fever! LOL!
You know I’ve been with you on the Stern led international takeover and (remember) said I thought I was the only one to see it. I just don’t think that BC is the type of guy to blow things up..his pace seems slow and steady! It’s a long term process IMO, because Euros are very reluctant about coming over here.. the money is better overseas, the lifestyle is better and unless you want something to prove to yourself competition wise, most of those guys don’t come over anymore. A lot of the ones that did come, go back and have nothing positive to say about the experience. NOTHING!!
And I don’t think anyone is demanding a team with US players.. that experiment under different management failed, although almost got us to the CF. Failed in the sense that once the fans turn on the US players the fan/player relationship becomes a nightmare and profit margins suffer. Maybe we need to keep mixing it up until we find the right ratio or at least the right combination of US/EURO.
We need US guys that accept Euros as capable players, not Bosh and TJ whom despise them (no surprise being from TX and all).
This whole thing is fun to observe as a social experiment.
Also, you seem to have this all or nothing approach.. one or the other.. and I thought that may be the solution as well, but once you consider all the factors, it’s simply inconceivable and not advisable as well, on so many levels.
May 6, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Oh Fluxo … We all know that liberal Canada and in particular multiculti Moronto is politically anti-American .. and you can bet that U.S. players on the Raptors are fully briefed on Canadian’s aversion to yankees..!!! Having said that, I do admit that Raptor fans do love their USian bball players, providing they provide them with fantasy and pleasure.. and in fact some of them want a pure NBA (Nothing But Africans - per John Salley of the Piston Bad Boys fame LOL) “athletic” roster for the Raptors.
The bleaching of the Raptors may not be favoured by some fans, but I suspect BC will rapidly convert the team to international players for a “rainbow” team befitting of multiculti Toronto …!!!!

I speculated that Bosh could be traded for Nowitzki, but was informed that Cuban would not let Dirk go. Now we have this speculation from hoopshype that Cuban might just sell the Mavericks and try to buy the Chicago Cubs. If Cuban goes, then Dirk might be available when the Mavs are blown up … ya think ..??!!!

Changes Ahead In Dallas?
The Dallas Morning News - May 6, 2008
The Mavericks appear to be prepared to make significant changes this offseason as they look to adjust their roster while still remaining competitive, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Former coach Avery Johnson even hinted at the severity of their problems on his way out the door. “I think there’s a lot of work to be done,” Johnson said. “Mark [Cuban] and Donnie [Nelson] realize that there’s some holes that are going to be have to be filled.”
The Mavericks don’t have a first round selection but still have a variety of options this offseason.
Some are wondering whether or not the team will admit that the Jason Kidd trade didn’t pan out and deal him out of town. They could also go in a completely different direction and deal former MVP Dirk Nowitzki. (realGM)

BC must now seriously consider trading Bosh for Dirk, because that would advance the Raptor’s move to an international team very significantly. Just imagine if Nowitzki was a Raptor and how that would attract other players here. Just imagine Nowitzki and Calderon operating on the court together!!! Awesome ..!!!!!!!!!

FAQ .. everything stops as of right now! BRING OUT THE REASON AND LOGIC , MAMA! CHUCK IS GONE! CHUCK IS GONE! CHUCK IS GONE! Alt Raps thanks for the info! I simply cannot believe it! Give back that Canadian citizenship you rat! Unbelievable! This has made my Raptors year. WOW!
I’M IN SHOCK!
May 6, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Yeah, we will be seeing a Dirk/Bargnani front court. /pukes
I guess bringing Dirk in won’t be so bad, i mean if Dirk teaches Bargnani his lifeswork, maybe, just maybe will Bargnani fulfill his destiny on becoming the ‘next Dirk’. :p
I mean, that’s what BC envisioned Bargnani to do right? But instead of having 1 Dirk, we have two!
May 6, 2008 at 7:38 pm
FAQ.. all lots of speculation. I personally have no desire for another clutch less Euro coming over here. Especially the Cotton Queen Dirka!

@RapsFan. Exactly! I don’t see it, I really don’t! This must not happen.
Leo better be next. And they better put Jack in there!
May 6, 2008 at 8:49 pm
Chuck S is gone because he was turfed for continually proclaiming that Bosh was “the franchise” so often, when he was told not to say such things … after all this tied BCs hands should he try to trade Bosh for something better and more appropriate for the Raptors of the future.
If Bosh is “the franchise”, why would BC ever try to trade him??? Swirsk diminished Bosh’s trade value with his silly statement, and perhaps getting rid of him was the first step in also getting rid of ‘the franchise’… ever think of that…??!!!

I can’t wait for arse’s eulogy/epitaph of Chuck. It might be the post of the year. It’s almost ten years in the making! >_>;

FAQ… that’s a stretch.. but OK. Anything is possible. But doesn’t every team have a guy the refer to as the franchise? And what are you saying… he blatantly dismissed orders and kept call him that? What reason would he have to do that? If anything they should have told him to pipe down on the salami and cheese, sick wicked and nasty, etc.
I don’t understand how the label would have tied BCs hands? Yes, because GMs go by what clown ass pbp yoyos say. I mean forget tapes, scouting, evaluations, what does the pbp guy have to say about him? That’s the deal breaker!
About your boy Jose.. looks like Miami will be courting him. I hope Riley talks him into it. Who wouldn’t want to play with DWade and the Matrix? C’mon Jose.. more people that speak your native language, the clubs, ladies, warm climate, beaches… what could stop you? C’mon YOU CAN DO IT!
May 7, 2008 at 12:42 pm
FLX … I hate to continually flummox you, but calling one player “the franchise” is beyond presumptuous .. it’s demeaning to all the other players on the team. It is a team sport after all, and if one player is “the franchise”, what happens when that player is injured for a long time??
No .. I don’t want to hear that Bosh is “the franchise” because that not only diminishes the efforts of all the other role players. Yes .. I know that tribal honking fans only look at “who scored” and don’t have the mental capability to evaluate the entire team effort .. like you and Arse do. I refuse to descend to the level of these besotted ‘fans’ who have the brainlets of the cheerleaders (or even less)..!!!
Jose would find it unbearable playing under DWade or mixing with the Cubans.
May 7, 2008 at 1:05 pm
Your flummox me with your amazing ability to speculate, fantasize and ignore reality without any logic or reason, IMO. Then again I’m not a citizen of FAQWorld. I’m not necessarily disagreeing with the franchise label (although I understand the need for it), I just don’t see the connection between the pbp guy calling him that and hurting his trade value or tying BCs hands. Maybe you can lead me thru this maze of complexity.
You need to accept the fact that you seem to expect too much from people that may not share the same level on interest and insight in something as you. Not only that, but their lack of insight or perceived bball IQ. I don’t understand why you hold that against them and blast them for it. It’s like screaming at a mentally challenged person! It’s like Einstein walking around calling everyone a moron cuz they don’t see the world like he did. It only makes you look more ignorant then them. But hey, do your thing man! You da man!
But I thought Jose was the ultimate bball player, that could adjust to anything and play with anyone due to his high European bball IQ? Are you saying this is now not the case?
May 7, 2008 at 1:10 pm
And the summary of all your comments brings up the question as to why you even bother watching NBA ball since you have a high level of hate towards its style of play and majority of its players?
May 7, 2008 at 1:37 pm
F … agreed that speculating can be disconnected, but it does open up one’s perspective and gets you out of the fan box to think more creatively. Your suggesting that I am dissing everybody because they are fans is mighty sweeping of you, and perhaps you yourself are stretching things a tad too much .. but if those are your feelings who am I to challenge your feelings.
As for Jose’s Euro-talent, all I said was that Jose would have to play behind DWade, unless the Heat want to convert him into a SG, or maybe even trade him given his injury-prone status. I don’t think Jose will flourish under a mixed US-Euro team mentality a la Raptors .. he needs a predominant Euro-style team to show us full bball IQ.
I watch the NBA playoffs because I like to see the players putting all out since it obviously enhances their market value if they do well as individual players. You can bet other teams are watching the players who are FAs, and deciding on how much they are worth. It’s money-time baby ….LOL

Stan McNeal - Sporting News - May 4, 2008
Toronto Raptors G.M. Bryan Colangelo plans to keep restricted free agent-to-be Jose Calderon, which means he will have two choices for handling his point guard duo of Calderon and T.J. Ford: 1) Keep both and run the risk Ford will be unhappy if he loses the starting job or 2) Trade Ford. Moving him would be the best move, but getting equal value won’t be easy. He’s scheduled to make $16 million-plus over the next two years. …
………………………………………..
So what is Jose worth now … $8 Million like TJ, or more like say 3 years and $30 Million .. or somewhere in between..???
Is BC telling everybody that he will match any offer made for Jose … or is he trying to depress Jose’s value by scaring of others …??!!!
Wouldn’t it be funny if Sun’s owner Sarver offered Jose $10 Million per year for 3 years thus forcing BC to match it .. and then forcing BC to trade TJ possibly to the Sun’s for less than value??!!!
May 8, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Sam Mitchell let it slip, in his closing press conference, that Jose Calderon is ‘HIS GUY’ … which, in fact, has been plain to see since the 2007 New Jersey playoff series.
Jose Calderon has no major weaknesses as a PG in the NBA … and is capable of leading his team to the Championship, in a similar vein as is Derek Fisher … i.e. when he gets to play with other solid players, like he did in Utah last season, he is very capable; when he gets to play beside a Superstar, or two, he is absolutely fabulous, doing what a PG of this type needs to do to WIN in a big way, facilitate the offense (with a high Ast:TO), defend & rebound his position.
(those who think that Jose cannot defend adqequately at the Point, or is incapable of doing so … are mistaken in this perception. What Jose needs to do in this particular area of the game, is receive specific instruction, from a coach(es) who know how to get a PG with the tools of Jose Calderon to defend in a different way than he’s been allowed/instructed to defend to this point in his NBA career. THAT’S ALL.)
Jose Calderon is a top notch PG in the NBA, who is still going to get better in the years ahead.
May 9, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Calderon posts word he desires starting job
Colangelo plans talks to sort out conflict with Ford over point guard
Toronto Star - May 09, 2008 … http://www.thestar.com/article/423237
Doug Smith - Sports Reporter
One position, two players who now have stated publicly they want it. Welcome to Bryan Colangelo’s dilemma.
Jose Calderon said on his personal website that he wants to be a starting NBA point guard, which is the same position coveted by T.J. Ford.
Calderon’s posting was his first public declaration that he wants the No.1 job. “I want to be a starter and be in a team that aspires to everything,” he wrote. “I will not be on a team in which I cannot be an important contributor.”
However, Calderon really doesn’t have much to say about where he plays next season. Because he is a restricted free agent when his contract expires July 1, the Raptors can match any offer he gets from another team, a move Colangelo has repeatedly said he will make.
The president and GM said he has yet to have any serious contract discussions with Calderon’s agents and he hasn’t reached out to Ford to see if the issue can be resolved.
“I’ve always said I found it a positive that T.J. felt he was a starter in the NBA,” Colangelo said yesterday. “Jose has obviously displayed he’s capable of having that attitude as well as being willing to make sacrifices.”
The GM, recently returned from a scouting trip to the EuroLeague Final Four in Madrid, said he’s letting a little time pass before he sits down for discussions with the players and their agents. Colangelo said at the end of the Raptors season he would “explore everything we can in terms of making it work with both of them. A short 12 months ago, it was our greatest strength, but I’m not ready to throw it out until we’ve completely exhausted that process.”
Ford has three years and about $26 million (all figures U.S.) left on his contract. Calderon was paid about $2.4 million last season but will be in for a substantial raise in any new deal.
………………………….
Well I guess this helps clarify the situation and the decisions BC must make between Jose and TJ … but of course he could keep both and hope for the best … ya think ..??!!!

Arsenalist,
Forgot to mention, at the time … simply classic stuff from Reservoir Dogs. :-)
