Down goes Boston! Down goes Boston!

Toronto Raptors 114, Boston Celtics 112

What a game! The Raptors take out Boston in a clutch and tense affair which put a premium on the proverbial ice in the veins. Jose Calderon’s two clutch free throws followed by a decisive drive to the rim for a three point-play put the Raptors up by two. Off an offensive rebound, Raptor killer Ray Allen had a wide-open, albeit fading away jumper rim out to give the Raptors a win that’ll reverberate around the association.

For a moment it looked like conceding 16 offensive rebounds and giving up 26 points on 19 turnovers would be too much for the Raps to overcome but 58% shooting compensated for all that and then some. When those outside shots are falling at close to 60% we can beat the ‘86 Celtics no problem, let alone this bunch. Chris Bosh was doubled every time he caught the ball but still managed to match Kevin Garnett’s output and when it counted in the fourth quarter, KG couldn’t stop Bosh. Andrea Bargnani, yes Andrea “Popeye” Bargnani showed up and showed up big. He singlehandedly kept us in the game in the first quarter by scoring, rebounding and passing like the player we thought he was. The best moment for me came at halftime when Leo Rautins interviewed him and asked about his first half performance:

“I’ve played very bad for one month. I don’t want to talk about myself.”

At least he seems to know just how bad he’s been of late, maybe, just maybe this game might bring him out of his HUGE slump and he might become a contributor and in some peoples’ eyes increase his trade value. Now even bringing this point up after a game like this makes me a party-pooper but if we were openly discussing it yesterday, there’s no reason not to do so today, right? Such are highs and lows of an NBA season that the goat of one game is the hero of the next. Let’s focus on what he did right today: he sealed of his man from the boards, on more than one occasion it was against KG that Bargnani timed his rebound jumps to perfection not allowing even a remote chance of an offensive rebound. On offense, he sold his shot fake, drove, and then pulled up for a jumper, then he took his time with an open three and drained it. On the other end, he kept his arms straight up and played defense with his feet instead of his hands. Instead of blindly taking the first shot, he looked for other options and created wide open threes three times. He drove to the rim, and when the defense challenged, he reversed it for the And1. In short, he played with confidence and was fundamentally solid which is where it must start with him. Even his offensive foul looked good.

As well as Bargnani played, the game ball goes to Jose Calderon and his 24 points and 14 assists. Jose’s outside jumper is soon going to be classified in the “deadly” category if it hasn’t already, when he has his feet set it’s a no-doubter and when coming off a screen where the PG goes under, he’ll drain it without hesitation, just ask Rondo. Anthony Parker’s efficient night of 8-12 FG offset a lot of things, one of them being Ray Allen. Allen went 7-16 for 19 points but had to work hard to get them, Parker was making him play defense and that naturally took away from Allen’s game. Besides the turnovers the main complaint against the guards today was letting Rajan Rondo and Tony Allen drive to the rim too easily, play your percentages and make them beat you from the outside, they can’t.

The +/- stat can be very misleading but sometimes it tells the entire story for a player and tonight Juan Dixon’s -13 was entirely indicative of what he brought to the floor. If there’s a game that you want Dixon sealed to the bench, it’s tonight. Boston made no secret of going at Dixon at every opportunity and always got points, Sam was smart to use him as little as possible and only because Calderon’s heart would’ve popped out of his mouth if he didn’t get a break. Personally, I would’ve given Graham a run today and see how he’d fare against Tony Allen who scored 14 straight on us. The rumor that Colangelo’s after Stoudamire might sound like good news but if he’s acquired it’ll throws a wrench at our point guard situation. I don’t even want to speculate what’s going to happen when TJ comes back (presumably after the All-Star break) and Damon’s demoted to 3rd string PG. Actually, since I think that would be a pretty shitty and unavoidable situation, it only makes sense that Colangelo won’t be going after Stoudamire.

I was calling for Humphries to get off the bench all game long, surely we could’ve use his hustle and muscle when we were having trouble grabbing boards, no? It’s one of those, “I’m glad we won so we won’t have to talk about it” decisions. The pessimist might say that this was a fluky win and we can’t possibly shoot 58% against Boston again, to which I’d say that we can’t also possibly commit 15 unforced turnovers. We saw some anomalies on both sides but in the end they evened out. There is a silver lining in the turnovers though, did you notice Jose trying to force the issue a few times and end up getting easy scores for Rasho, Bosh and Parker? One of the chief complaints against Jose is that he’s too conservative and doesn’t drive and kick, today he showed that if he wants, he can break down a good defensive guard like Rondo and create for his mates. His penetration set up more than a few open jumpers off the second pass, yeah, his inside-outside pass got picked off a couple times, but overall it was very effective.

Scalabrine’s three which put the Celtics up by 7 at the start of the fourth looked to be a turning point which would see Boston pull away. But Bosh, Parker and Delfino were huge to open the fourth while Calderon rested for four minutes. At first it appeared that Sam had made a mistake in benching Calderon to open the quarter and there’s no doubt if we’d lost, that would’ve been brought up in bolded font. However the aforementioned trio scored every single Raptor point until 30 seconds left in the game which is when Calderon took over. Even when the Celtics turned up their defensive intensity, the Raptors always had an answer which silenced the crowd and inched this game closer to being one of the best played between the two clubs.

Doc Rivers, you surprised by the shooting?

“Fifty-eight percent from the floor; 71 percent from the 3; 100 percent from the foul line. At least the foul line wasn’t guarded. Half the guys in our league couldn’t shoot 15-for-21 if they were in a gym by themselves, It was almost like we didn’t believe they would shoot another one.”

Yeah, I know Doc, sucks when the other team’s lighting you up, eh?

One-Liners:

* Anybody tired of watching Jamario Moon shoot jumpers yet?

* Carlos Delfino hovers so close to the border of being a chucker that sometimes we’re just forced to admit that the man looks for his shot first at all times. His baseline fadeaway and pull-up three was unacceptable, luckily, those are the only two shots he forced.

* Anthony Parker: There’s no reason to be unsatisfied with his play, I thought that the Doug Smith C grade was very harsh. He’s basically producing the same as last year, if you look at his PER, they’re almost identical. Yes, he has bad games but he doesn’t get stuck in ruts and continues to try to make the right plays on the court.

* Our rotations were brutal and we got carved out too easily once Pierce and Allen got into the lane.

* Chris Bosh took a backseat tonight and had a quiet 23/7 which was overshadowed by some turnovers where he tried to make passes which he’s never done before. He made three very tough jumpers which probably should’ve been drives but came up big for us in the fourth with key hoops and FTs. For the first time in a long time, the potentially great balance that this Raptors team has was displayed on the court.

* If Ray Allen would’ve hit that jumper this entire post would’ve been about defensive rebounding.

* So Bargnani’s ordering spinach salad’s with with Swirsky and Maurizio Gherardini (according to Chuck, he is God incarnated as man ) while Bosh and Moon are probably zoning out to Madden ‘08. The company we keep.

* What does this win mean? It says Game 1 could’ve gone either way, in Game 2 we didn’t have our big guns, you guys beat us fair and square in Game 3 and we won Game 4. I think it gives the Raptors a true sense of belief that they can compete with Boston.

* Best defense in the NBA you say? 114 points I say. Fuckin ‘eh.

Later. Try the trivia, it took me a while to come up with the questions. Feed.

Whooooooooo!! We finally beat Boston!! Everyone’s a hero 2nite, just because we beat Boston!! Even though I would like to to see Jason Kapono get a little more burn! Besides that, Great Win!

  2. RapsFan Says:

GREAT GAME TONIGHT! Consumed quite some time of my exam review but that was totally worth it. I thought that we were going to get screwed over by Ray Ray again, but luckily the shot didn’t go in. We were due for a win and we got it.

Raptors were off to a good start since the beginning, although the 19 odd turnovers which the Celts capitalized for 20+ points really killed us. Like Leo said, it wasn’t even the Celtic defense that had caused that, it was because of lazy passes. If we were to lose tonight, that would be the main reason to why we lost, that along with the offensive rebounds we allowed over and over again (Smitch pissed) Luckily, the Raptors were firing from all cylinders shooting an UNGODLY percentage from the outside along with clutch plays got us the win.

Bargnani, what a game. 20/7/7/1 block fills up the stat sheet quite nicely, nice to see that once his offensive game and his confidence is high, he is a legit threat.

Bosh wasn’t a factor in the first 3 quarters, which was a bit disappointing. He should have taken advantages of matchups while KG was out, mainly on Big Baby and Skalebrine where he could tear them apart. He did take more initiative in the forth which is good.

Calderon, enough said. Mad clutch with the dead-eye shot. HE SHOULD DRIVE TO THE RIM MORE DAMNIT, that play was unreal.

And yes, to comment one thing that I’m also getting tired of is Moon’s jump shots. He played decent defense on his man and Pierce was a non-factor to the game game. But damnit, he can get to the rim, so why not get in to the paint? Our shots in paint was a horrendous 13-14? compared to Boston’s 50 odd points.

In the end, I think what lost the Celts this game was that the defense wasn’t there. What happened to the Celtic defense intensity from we what we’ve seen from the past 3 encounters? That’s in my opinion where they lost the game, they usually had the choke hold defense from what I’ve seen, they didn’t bring that to the court today, which translated to 114 Raptor points, much higher than the season average they allow on opposing teams. Looks like they underestimated the Raps coming in after winning the last 3.

The scoring/mad shooting % along with lack of usual Celtic defense saved our asses today, Bargs step up obviously played a big role in it as well. GREAT GAME, the best yet this season.

P.S. To those who didn’t see Smitch’s reactions after the game, I would highly suggest you to Youtube it because that was just gold. I reacted similarly after they had won though, was yelling and screaming when it was over.

” If Ray Allen would’ve hit that jumper this entire post would’ve been about defensive rebounding.” … I was thinking the same thing - good thing that last shot didn’t drop down. Good to see Bargs hit his stride again, hopefully this is just the beginning of a productive 2nd half after an underachieving first half of the season. Gotta love Bargs telling Leo like it is (and realizing that he’s been crap lately)… poor Leo didn’t get the invite to dinner. One last thing, it’s a damn good thing the ref didnt’ call that second foul on Barney early in the first quarter. The replay clearly shows the foul was on Bargs, rather than Bosh. Will take the win, maybe pull out the ol’ jersey tomorrow, too. Ahh, Raptor pride.

  5. Sam is COY Says:

RapsFan > you’d have thought Smitch won the lottery with his jump/crouch at the end :) probably felt like it too! LOL … I for one felt the elation as well.

I am glad that I was proven wrong by Bargs (I wanted him nailed to the bench) and Calderon (I was really getting annoyed at him not driving into the lane like I know he could).

I was also ticked that Jmoon kept shooting jumpers when it looked like he had a clear path to the rim. It’s good that his defense and rebounding doesn’t fall off when his offense is stagnanat.

LOL @ Delfino going 5/5 on 3 and 0/2 on 2. Makes me wonder, do we still have a need for Kapono (just wondering)?

On Mighty Mouse > I didn’t like his game when he was here before, I am not too crazy on him coming back.

  6. Crank Says:

“The pessimist might say that this was a fluky win and we can’t possibly shoot 58% against Boston again, to which I’d say that we can’t also possibly commit 15 unforced turnovers. We saw some anomalies on both sides but in the end they evened out.”

Amen, the Celtic fans are thinking that we just got hot for a game but Bosh/Calderon/Parker had so many unforced TOs in the first half that if it hadn’t been for them we’d be up by 20 at halftime.

Thought Rasho did an alright job against KG and we played good enough ball denial in the fourth to keep him in check.

I’ll still talk Bargnani trade, one good game doesn’t change that.

SAMisCOY - Delfino can’t replace Kapono, he’s a streak shooter and can’t be relied upon to hit 3s consistently. Kapono’s problem is not having TJ around to get him shots and playing with Dixon instead of Calderon. Smitch needs to get a little creative with him, when TJ comes back he’ll come around, no worries.

  7. Birdman Says:

    * Wow, what a game… shooting 60% was the only way we could have overcome those ghastly turnovers.

    * Did you see Smitch unleash an earful at Moon at the start of a timeout in the 3rd after he missed a jumper? I think Smitch was mouthing the thoughts of every Raps fan watching at home. I think Smitch should dub over this video substituting “Britney” for “your jump shot” and have Jamario watch it a dozen times with his eyelids taped to his forehead.

    * I think I had about 3 heart attacks in the last 2 minutes of the game. Ray Allen sprinting to scoop up an offensive rebound off his own missed 3-pointer really riled me. Calderon was just standing around expecting someone else to grab it.

    * Saying Delfino is a chucker after a game like this isn’t really fair, Arsenalist; he was on FIRE from 3, so why not keep jacking ‘em up? I agree that baseline fade was an awful choice, but he was shooting so well up to that point.

  8. Raps Fan Says:

when i was writing my post, i don’t know why i wasn’t more excited. i had to sleep on it to realize, and you summed it up perfectly: if allen hit that jumper, defensive rebounding would have been the topic of everyones posts. no only defensive, rebounding in general, the raptors only grabbed 29 for the game, that is 7 rebounds a quarter.

i agree that the first game could have went both ways, but this team can’t compete with boston for one reasons: we had to shoot 58% from the filed, 71% from beyond the arc and 100% from the line. how in the good lords name do they replicate that sort of performance on a consistent basis against he better teams? we can’t even do that against the crap teams.

smitch was hilarious in the post game: “do i have to answer that? does it feel good to beat the best team in the nba on their floor? yes, yes it does”! lol

  9. Sam is COY Says:

Crank > I agree about Kapono, although, he is a pretty good trade asset (Shaq seems to think so :), and if he’s the player that GM’s want for a rebounding/defensive specialist, I’d give him up in a heatbeat (don’t get me wrong, I like his Dell Curry game, but aside from Calderon, I don’t know if anyone else is tradeable).

Raps Fan > Yeah, it’s one of those “what if wins”. But to be fair, we have a lot of “what if loses” as well. So being happy about is okay. As you implied though, we need that X-factor on the defensive/rebounding side. How many more wins do we get with 10 more rebounds a game is likely the question out of all this.

BTW, how do you guys feel about Damon? Did you like his game? Not like it?

  10. cuzoogle Says:

great write up as always. The point about the post being totally different based on Ray Ray’s missed jumper is so true.

You have to be lucky to be good and the lucky gods were smiling at the Raps tonight.

I am going to enjoy it now because we all know they could very will stink it up against the Bucks tomorrow.

Ah you gotta love the NBA.

  11. Dinosty Says:

I wouldn’t be so sure TJ’s coming back so quick…I think it’s one of those things where they might SAY he’s back after the ASB, but nothing is definitive and no one’s seeing TJ back in full contact practice.

Getting someone like Damon is so important right now, as Jose’s being asked to do more than he should and right now we have NO backup PG. Juan (out of position) and Darrick (donkey) provide nothing - no security, no consistency, no leadership (on the court).

Seeing as how we don’t know for sure TJ is coming back, getting a solid veteran backup is absolutely necessary.

  12. PapiJulio Says:

People are all over the stats with this one. What if this, what if that…. Last night was a great display of hardnosed basketball that no one gave up on. Nobody hung their heads when we were down. We kept our competitive spirits & people played within their roll. Players came in and did their jobs for 48 minutes. I’m not saying we played perfect, but I saw a team last night compete all game!! Even if say, we did loose we came and traded plays with one of the best teams in the NBA.

Boston probably didn’t take us serious when the game started and wasn’t mentally prepared to defend the Raptor’s break out game. Boston ranked #1, but I think they are too shallow for the long grind off the playoffs. Play as a team and anything can happen. Just look at the Lakers this year. I’m no Lakers fan but I told my friend to watch out for them since the pre-season. They are playing as a team. I think Kobe was abducted by aliens personally.

Bargnani silenced the critics for a bit, and some are too proud to admit they are wrong about this guy. Like I said a couple posts ago there ain’t no room left on the ‘Bargnani Band Wagon’ for wagon hoppers. Bargnani show last night how he starting to understand the big difference in the American & European game. He didn’t look confused, he looked very decesive. Throughout the controversy, I know it’s not over, Bargnani never hung his head and always took full blame. A very good sign for someone that’s a competitor and does care!

“ it’s a damn good thing the ref didnt’ call that second foul on Bargnani early in the first quarter”
That could have really change the game!! He’s getting much better at defense positioning and moving his feet and not just his hands.

As far as getting a PG right now… I know it tough but you can go getting a star PG with TJ such a question. Nobody would come into a situation like that. Especially a star. Calderon can log a lot of minutes, it’s not the best route but you don’t want to do anything drastic, yet. I’m not looking to win the championship this year, just a couple round into the playoffs. We can make a much better decision about the PG later. Plus, all the starts and game time experience Calderon is getting now is really elevating his game to new levels. Who knows where this guy ceiling is right now.

PapiJulio > actually Jose is in danger of burning out before, or, even during the playoffs (without help). I don’t think anyone is really thinking of a “star” PG, because, like Centers, they are pretty rare. We do need another ball handler who could protect the ball and set up his teams shots.

Remember, we’re only 1/2 thru the season.

  17. PapiJulio Says:

Sam is COY… I hear ya. That’s why I’m not expecting too much in the playoffs. Calderon will probably burn out, I agree. If we still had Jorge Garbajosa a healthy TJ and solid Bargnani efforts I might get my hopes up about winning the East and a shot at the title. Right now I think we just re-invented who the Raptors are. With the new accusitions and injuries the scope of the Raptors was changed AGAIN this season. I think Sam just found a combination that works!

Just think…. if Ford comes back this season he’ll finish the season coming off the bench. How’s that for a backup point guard!!! WE CAN ONLY HOPE!! I’m no Doctor, and don’t know the TURE extent of his injury… but it sound better everyday.

  18. PapiJulio Says:

As far as next season… Calderon WILL make more money. We can’t tie a ‘Left Nut’ up with PG $$$ between TJ & Calderon….. TJ has… what 3yrs left with a big contract. It’s a tough spot for any GM! But they better do their homework!

Papi hear yourself talk man, shot at a title? That’s not happening until we get a legit second STAR, not Jose Calderon, a star player. We should be happy if we win the first round and maaaaybe win a second. That’s as far as we can go with everybody including TJ/Calderon/Garbajosa healthy….expectations in check my friend.

  21. Sam is COY Says:

Red Rebounder > It’s not too much of a stretch in the East :) a couple of injuries in Boston (KG), or suspensions in Detroit (Sheed), who knows? Plus (it’s a stretch) maybe Bargs finally woke up (okay, yeah, one game, a Raps fan can hope, can’t he?) :)

    Starting
    PG-Calderon SG-Parker SF-Moon PF-Bosh Center-Bargnani

    Bench
    PG-Ford SG-Delfino SF-Garbo/Kapono/Graham PF-Graham/Humphries/Garbo
    C- Rosho

Pretty solid bench! Garbo is the major key in this Fantasy!!People have to give Garbo a lot more credit. Keeps people clam in crunch time, and plays hard, dives for balls, a smooth operator with major European championship experience. I know he’s not coming back till next season & could be a different player when he does. Age is also a factor.

Mami is a washout ths year, Magic is still developing. Besides Detorit OR Boston who could beat us in the East? BUT….if we beat Detriot OR Boston, I’m not saying we’d win the Championship but we’d a SHOOTING chance!

PS.. I’m not getting excited just because we beat Boston. Could have went either way, but we showed some of our ture colours people quickly forget have.

  25. Raps Fan Says:

sorry to be buzz killington, but cleveland could/will beat us, jersey could beat us, washington is matchup hell. as it stands, this current raptors incarnation can’t win a round in the playoffs, unless we get atlanta or indiana.

I’m not going too far into this. I know people will be all over it.
If we had Jorge Garbajosa with the current mix & healthy TJ….

Cleveland– LeBron could beat anybody! Cleveland bench is weak too!

Jersey is an implosion wait to happen. They will fall apart! Jason Kidd, Carter & Jefferson will kill each other before the seasons over.

Wizards- Not bad starters but their bench SUCKS!!!

Come on Raps Fan our strength was with how the Raptors had a complete team. Calderon would start because starting TJ late in the season would mess things up. Jorge Garbajosa & TJ off the bench.
We could trade baskets with any of those teams and defiantly beat their bench! People just don’t want to go out on a line… but I guess I just did….

With all fairness we’ll still haven’t proved this to the fans & people must be thinking I just got off the crack pipe… but with what we got we can defiantly go places. If TJ comes back before the playoffs and Bargnani hits stride & BC makes another magic pickup I predict a 3rd round. Garbajosa would have kept us battling in the finals against Detroit because our depth would keep us alive.

TJ, Delfino, Kapono/Garbo, Humphries/Graham, Rosho  Bench –Defense & Scoring–

No I am not getting excited because we beat Boston. I’m just seeing people reactions!

It’s sink or swim with comments like these………

  28. arsenalist Says:

Papi, I see your point and a lot of what you’re saying holds true for the regular season. But when it comes down to playoff basketball, in a heated 7-game series where every possession is pressure, I have to say that I don’t like our chances against Cleveland or New Jersey.

For the most part the Raptors haven’t responded well in big games this year and they’re still a team that has very little playoff experience. I think Lebron’s star power in late-game situations combined with our key rebounding weakness might be our downfall in that series. As for NJ, they’re having a miserable season but if they make it into the playoffs, get the Big 3 thinking straight and playing hard (let’s face it, the level of intensity in playoffs and regular season isn’t even comparable), we might be in trouble for the same reasons as last year.

I think you’re overvaluing what Garbajosa might bring to the table and the difference he might make in a series. He’s a good defender no doubt but he’s going to be taking minutes away from Moon and Delfino who are probably better and more versatile defenders than him anyway (you could argue Garbo > Delfino), he might be a better rebounder but the overall tradeoff is the same IMHO.

Now having said that, I think we can beat New Jersey if we win the PG matchup because for us to win Kidd can’t be allowed to go off. As for Cleveland, rebounding must be even for us to have a chance. It’s hard to say whether we can beat certain teams or not because in each case we need to win a particular matchup or a particular area of the series.

  29. PapiJulio Says:

Garbajosa is flying way under the radar. Look at last season when the Raptors panicked and he was on the floor. Garbajosa never panicked. A smooth operator. Taking charges, diving for balls, Great help defense, grit, match-up problem when moved to the 3 spot, could make the shot just outside the paint. Garbajosa is one os the smartest basketball minds we have. He was very versatile at his position, you could use him at the 2,3,4,5 if the match-up permitted. Also is a major competitor. Never a quick shot, alway looking for his teammates and knew the spots his teammates thrived from. He’s once of the most underrated players in the NBA. The injury really set him back. Plus the guy would play even if he was injured. Not really a good thing but he thinks about the team before himself. I’d take a guy like that on my team any day. Especially in with the NBA full of a bunch of cry babies. Not tough like they used to be.

  30. PapiJulio Says:

Our start would be able to endure the 7 Game series because of a deep bench. Without Garbajosa the bench has a big hole and we’d had a tough time with the current mix.

Can we add Boston Celtics Team blog to the widget, too? That means that every time you post to your blog the headline of the post will show up on the widget and link directly to your post.
Anyone who puts this widget on their start page or on their website will see your Boston Celtics posts too. It’s a powerful and free way to publicize your site.

Finally, would you add the Boston Celtics News Widget to your site so that others can see it?
Everyone who grabs the widget will automatically link to you so it’s great for your search engine rankings. Plus, it shows a lot of stories about NBA and since it’s updated every hour it is fresh and will make your site even more appealing than it already is.

    What do you think?

    Go Boston Celtics
