Contradictory Wenger selects Gallas as captain

I suppose I shouldn’t be shocked that I erroneously trusted this Sun article’s claim that Gilberto would captain Arsenal this season. Turns out Gilberto might be out till September and it’s..sigh…William Gallas that will be the captain with both Toure and Gilberto as vice-captains. Crazy Lens will also play a part in captaining the team so there’s no shortage of leadership. Now these are the four players on the team where leadership might come from but why Gallas was chosen is a mystery. Arsene Wenger’s not making much sense to me.

“I feel centre back is always the best position to lead on the pitch and it is Gallas who has more experience at the back. But Gilberto has always been a great captain and Kolo Toure has a stature too.

If centre back is the best position to lead on the pitch how come Toure or Gallas weren’t vice-captain last year. Henry was out for half the season, why didn’t this logic kick in then? Or when Vieira was captain? Gallas isn’t that bad I suppose, we’ll survive as long as he keeps his mouth shut and doesn’t let the additional pressure translate to lapses on the pitch. Besides, he’s just hanging on to the job for a year or so until RVP or Fabregas takes over. As The Cannon says both Toure or Gilberto would’ve been better choices because both have been with the team longer and have a solid reputation. But, In Wenger We Trust and as the Gunnerblog suggests we might even be selling Gilberto.

Here’s Gallas being positive about the season and here’s him dismissing the scum, it’s heartwarming stuff:

“I am confident we will finish above Tottenham, but they are not our main concern – we want to win the title.”

Keep talking like that he’ll be the number one fan favorite. One side note, Senderos was captain for one game in the preseason and probably got his hopes raised for a vice-captain job, hopefully he’s not too hurt. For what it’s worth I’d take Gallas over Senderos for captain. Thinking about this a little more, here’s my current captain pecking order:

  1. Gilberto
  2. Toure
  3. Lehmann
  4. Gallas
  5. Senderos
  6. van Persie
  7. Hleb
  8. Fabregas

The Premier League is re-writing the rulebook after the Carlos Tevez fiasco and how Manchester United played 4 of their 38 league games, and an FA Cup semi-final, against second-string goalkeepers because of a loophole in the law. Lucky bastards. Browsing the news you’ll also read that Birmingham City’s after Djourou but as the Arseblog echoed it’s highly unlikely that will materialize.
